Leaders at the print company IMAGE ONE are focused on helping employees better communicate about their personal and professional lives, providing work arrangements that work based on employee needs and monitoring the work environment so that it remains supportive. There are systems in place to ensure that employees and leaders are talking about workflow and how individuals are handling work volume and stress. When problems arise, adjustments are made to help diminish feelings of overwork. Employees have access to workshops to help with burn out and also to teach things such as medication and healthy eating. One unique program is “We Care Fridays.” Each Friday, one unsuspecting team member receives the day off paid. Flexibility also plays a key role in ensuring a happy and productive workforce. For example, one of the customer care team members needed to relocate out of state for her spouse’s job. Instead of losing a valuable member of the team, leaders adjusted her position and provided her technology resources so that she can work full time from her new home. In 2012, the company offered a 12-month communications workshop designed to help employees share personal and professional experiences and learn how to communicate better in their lives. All these initiatives have helped the company retain and attract employees.
